One Thousand White Women is the story of May Dodd and a colorful assembly of pioneer women who, under the auspices of the U.S. government, travel to the western prairies in 1875 to intermarry among the Cheyenne Indians. The covert and controversial "Brides for Indians" program, launched by the administration of Ulysses S. Grant, is intended to help assimilate the Indians into the white man's world. Toward that end May and her friends embark upon the adventure of their lifetime. Jim Fergus has so vividly depicted the American West that it is as if these diaries are a capsule in time.

    Thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. I just wonder how much of this story actually "is/was" the way it really was then. Seemed so real. Characters, imagery, savagery, friendships and kindness. I enjoyed the history aspect of this story...and...I do believe this "pact/trade" with the government was real.

  • One of my favorite books!

    This was one of my favorite reads. However because I had searched for historical fiction I thought it was mostly true the whole time I was reading it. I told all my friends about this unbelievable part of history and then discovered the only part that was true was that the chief had asked the president for 100 white women but was declined. So I had to humble myself and retract my story to my friends. But I still loved the book, just wish it had been true.

    This book was very exciting. It was so real at times I couldn't put it down. Well written and researched. The connection to a real family out of Chicago and the occurrences of the day could very well have happened in so many families. A must read to all who enjoy the old West stories A White Woman
